Description

BROWNING ‘DOUBLE AUTO’ 12G SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN. C 479

2 SHOT Double Auto Browning 12g Semi-Automatic Shotgun dating all the way back to 1952 and THE FIRST year of production. (As information direct from Browning US). With Serial Number 479 its extremely unlikely you will EVER find an earlier example. ANY even half way serious Browning Enthusiast let alone Collector and this is a once in a lifetime chance!

Apparently detail online is / WAS incorrect in that production of these guns ran from 1952 to 1971. With only around 67,000 ever made its not a big number for any to survive. Testament to just how good they are that they do!
For more history you are probably best simply checking details out on Wikipedia where I just amended dates. 26-09-2023. Or other accurate sites.

Becoming quite collectable as people ‘discover’ just how well designed and superbly well made these guns are. (As the even older Auto 5 options were that John Browning originally designed). Also the fact they are getting harder and harder to find means they are likely to only go one way in value. Even if they don’t you have a gun you can have some great shooting with. Just enjoy while you wait and see.

This gun came in from a previous customer who had put a small collection of 5 together over many years. He WOULD like them to find an equally appreciative new home.

27 ½” (700mm) Plain, None Ribbed Barrel with Raised Single front sighting bead. Fixed choke at a approx. Half restriction. Chambered 2 ¾” (70mm). Stock pull is 14” (355mm) and brings in an overall length of 46 ¾” (1185mm). Scales show a weight of 7 lbs 11 oz (3.487 Kg). As such a Standard Model and SPOT ON specified production weight when new. Not too bad for 71 years old!
Generally GREAT condition considering its age. The original Pressed Horn Butt Plate is still in place too. Strong Straight Grain with Reasonable Colour Contrast to the Prince of Wales Pistol Grip Stock. Chequering IS just about flat but is still reasonably well defined. It will easily re-cut. Or simply leave it as the same authentic, honest gun it currently is. No damage to the forend from people trying to strip barrels the wrong way. If you are not SURE just ask.
Bright Finished Steel Action which appears original. Zero sign of any other finish anywhere. If it has been worn away and removed its certainly happened a long time ago. The usual Simple but Nice Panels of Scrollwork Engraving with a Zig-Zag pattern Border all around the outer edges. Roller Ball style safety positioned to the rear on the Trigger Guard but not currently fitted. It IS here and available but the previous owner preferred to use it as is.
This one IS going into my ‘SLEEPER’ category, even though used reasonably regularly. For any gun of this era to look and function as well as this it deserves nothing less. ANY modern day designer would do EXTREMELY well to strip one of these and an Auto 5 Browning. Look at some SERIOUS Design and Engineering.
WITH THIS SERIAL NUMBER A SERIOUS COLLECTORS PIECE AND I THINK VERY REASONABLY PRICED CONSIDERING. If you disagree its simple: Don’t buy it.

NO. NOT STEEL SH-T PROOF BUT DO PLEASE READ ON:
THERE ARE more and more None Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern day shooting. IF its so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters how is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?

Anyway, take a look for yourself:

NOW, to TRY and help speed up availability I WILL also suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ALL of us start to ask whoever we buy from why they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET. YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons. RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
